Clones

Okay im playing Ultima 7 again and this is my first time using the Clone spell. My question is what good is a clone?

Does a Clone take up a npc slot once created? and if so what number?

When i created a Clone. All it did was stand there looking pretty.. if i wanted a clone at least make him a party member if not tempory?
