I'm from Germany but live in Austria.
.au is Australia and .at is Austria.
Austria is in Europe and Hitler was born there.
Australia is in ... Australia and they fought Hitler (AFAIK)
The thing they have in common: certain people from a certain continet can't tell them apart, even if you say "Austria/Europe"

Oh, by thinking of recent changes, I really miss the mandatory weekly U7online thread, the repeating 'do this for U8' isn't really the same.

Darke: How can you live on the third planet of Alpha Centauri? Alpha Centauri is a binary star system, meaning that no planet can orbit it because of the gravity changing the trajectory of the planet and hurdle it into space or into itself. Even then, there are, most likely, not any planets orbiting Alpha Centauri. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It could happen, and isn't that unlikely really, you just would have to expect very odd seasons, and rotational changes,.... (Think you get sick on some fair ride, try living on a planet that keeps changing direction,...)

Off Topic threads are always good for boards, they let people play, and you never know what comes out of them. (Knew a guy that developed a plot line for his "NYT bestseller",... I think I threw my copy out after the tenth page,... and I was just skimming)

*Never said what comes of them is good now*

Also, very odd, I posted here the other day, yet it isn't here,...

oh well, I'm from eastren Canada,... I had a fair rant there before, but I forget it, but it was funny,... I think.

Some guy sitting infront of a crapy computer and needs a new one,...

It may be what you define a nice place... it's got fine weather for 300 days a year and temperatures rise above 40 degrees celsius in summer... it's just TOO hot. :)

Believe it or not, but lame T-Shirts that read "There are no kangaroos in Austria" are in fact being sold here :/

I agree that .at and .au are easy to confuse. However, I thought since we share the same language with Germany, Germans would stumble across lots of .at (and .ch, which is Switzerland) sites in the Internet and thus recognize the ending. It seems I was wrong :)

Some examples:
- recently I looked for something on ebay.com and asked the seller if he would ship to Austria. He replied that shipping to Australia would cost $ X.xx. I then asked something else and (not to emberass him) wrote that I live not in Australia but in Austria/Europe. Somehow he didn't seem to get that even in the next reply :-)

- When I was in the US over a year ago with my gf and her kid, an elderly woman asked where we came from and I answered Austria. She was then confused and said she thought that we spoke English over there. When I replied we come from Austria Europe she didn't want to talk to me anymore :-)

Hacki, I have to confess before I looked up the university of Vienna for place to study I didn't come across much (if not none) .at sites. I rarely stumble upon .ch sites as well.

<OT>
In French:
Merci de ton aide

My guess on what it meant:
Thanks for your help

What it really was:
Thank you for your assistance

I was close enough. The main point I'm trying to make is if you have an extensive enough vocabulary in English, you should be able to read French relatively well, noticing so many words in English are derived from French. Along with that, many French words are just plain common, like merci.

For once, Skutarth, not only you made sense but I entirely agree with you.
Knowing both language myself pretty well, I am _amazed_ on how similar they are. I know a bit of Polish and a tad of German, and honestly, French-English are much more similar than any other French-X combinaison I know.

Also OT:

What I noticed about French is that there's the proper language, and then the version that everybody speaks. Back in college, I was able to read an entire math book in French (one of the Bourbaki volumes) with very little trouble, because it was written in 'proper' French. But I also have a couple French 'Peanuts' comic books, and they're almost impossible to get through. Half the words don't appear in the dictionary!

>>English are derived from French

Actually, that's not quite correct. French is derived from Latin, while English was just greatly influenced by Latin. That's why English grammar is still quite different to French one.

>>French-English are much more similar than any other French-X combinaison I know.

Italian and Spanish are generally more similar to French, because they all belong to the same language family that is directly derived from Latin :)

Then again, almost all European languages can be traced back to Indo-European anyway, including Latin, Greece, and ancient German. It's fascinating how different words have evolved over time. For instance, Indo-European "kuuon" became kyon in Greece (which lead to the modern English word cynical), canis in Latin, Hund in German, and hound in English.

Adding to the above post English is actually said to be of Germanic descent.

English is classified like Germanic language.

Spanish, Italian, Portuguesse and French (among others) are Romance languages (Latin derived).

I'm not German speaker but I find very similarities between english and german (in vocabulary, not between the structure of the sentences). I fact I can barely understand (or guess) some simple things in german with my knowing of english.

speaking english and french (and norwegian) as foreign languages and
german as a native speaker, i think french is closer to german than english,
at least concerning grammar...

while french (like german) has 'millions of millions of difficult tenses' with
unregular verbes, english is quite easy to learn for a beginner. what makes
english so hard to understand is the vocabulary. while german or french
people have 2 different words for one and the same thing, the english have
10.

i recently started to read moby dick, but after only a few pages i realized
that i have to fail, understanding just maybe half of the keywords...

I found that my English considerably improved once I began to participate in international Internet chats, newsgroups, and message boards like this one.

When I now read my old English homework books from school (they are only two years old), I am amazed at how bad my grammar and style had been :)

>>what makes english so hard to understand is the vocabulary. while german or french people have 2 different words for one and the same thing, the english have 10.

I think you exaggerate a bit. I've never made that observation. Any example?

As I mentioned I currently live in Aloha, OR, but I have lived in just a tad over twenty cities in my lifetime, all over the U.S. pacific northwest. Oregon, Washington, California, Colorado.... I've never stayed in one place for very long.

you should know where you are born...
maybe it's bitburg (google says there is no bipburg in germany), because
there's an american military airport and since 1985 a military base (closed
in 1994).
one of my famous beers comes from there: bitburger! (see thread 'voices'...)

And on the language related topic:
>>>>English are derived from French

>>Actually, that's not quite correct. French is derived from Latin, while English was just greatly influenced by Latin. That's why English grammar is still quite different to French one.

Hacki, I'm not a historian (so correct me if I'm wrong) but aren't you skipping battle of Hastings in 1066 and its influence on English language here? Remember that Skutarth mentioned vocabulary, not grammar. As far I know, after 1066 the original English (its "fully Germanic form") was replaced by French among the aristocracy, while the was still spoken by the rest of the population.
As a result we have "arrive" and "come" meaning almost the same, but with "arrive" (French: arriver) being the more elegant one. In fact, Old English (the one spoken in the Middle Ages) is really similar to German.
I've one read an article that stated that more-less 60% of English words is of French origin. I may look for it if you want a proof ;)

Please don't beat on a very old topic. The only reason it got revived was because of a spam post and me not wanting to delete a legitimate reply.
If you want to post where you are from, please go ahead, but continuing a years old discussion... Please no ;)

Wow, 7 years on, I'm still at the same desk, but different computer, monitor, keyboard and mouse. :) Oh yea, new chair too as my old one finally carked it a couple of weeks ago.

Funny though too, I remember 7 years ago I said I was surrounded by computers, I've now got less of them than I did back then. :) Oh yea, it's 3:14pm and the 14th of november 2010.

Finally with a better isp too as it should be next to my name above ^. :)

Used to play U7 back in the early 90's and I was not even a teenager. The game is just as good now as it was then.

Thumbs up to the guys who created and maintain Exult!
