i have everything working been messing with settings myself cant get it to run smoothly. I have never played this before but the walking seems very choppy and slow to me. any help?

can you go to the options and add a few fps?
Gameplay options -> speed -> 8 fps for example?

It's always been "choppy". That's how it was first made. It's a combination of tiles and limited number of animated frames, then put together into a "scroller".

Being slow though is only due to a slow computer. It can be a very fast game.

This is one thing that the SNES port does better even though it does almost everything worse. It doesn't have so much to do with animation frames as it does how the scrolling/movement was implemented.
