Custom Game using ES and SI

I've just completed a short design document regarding the opening for a custom game. I intend to construct this custom game's opening sequence, which would consist of a couple of short, in-game conversations in a bar, followed by a short video of the game world's map (a la the opening of U7, when the camera pans around the Avatar's desk, but focused purely on my story's world map) and then to the title screen. Just from perusing the screenshots of ES in action, and a couple of shots of the Usecode, I think I should be able to achieve everything I want in a relatively short period of time.

My big concern comes from the short video part. I have no idea how this was achieved in U7's opening, how it could be achieved in ES, or even if such functionality exists. This portion of the introduction would help to establish the game world in terms of scope, style, and feel, so it is important to put in there.

Can anyone shed any light on the subject? Thanks.

Exult hard-codes it, much like the original.

It can't. Not yet, anyway, but it is in the plans (which could take quite a while...).

Upon examining the ULTIMA7 folder, I did find an INTRO.EXE program that goes along with what you're saying.

Which brings me to another approach: I wonder if I could either

A) transform, scale, and fade a static graphic through usecode to achieve the same effect of the cinematic, or

B) make and display a multiple-frame graphic that would do the same (through frames as opposed to usecode)?

Time for some mad-scientist style tinkering.

Aye, the original games used the intro.exe program to run the intro and show the main game menu. The exit codes would tell the main exe (ultima.com or serpent.com) whether to run the game or not. Exult just has everything in the same exe.

As for the rest of your post: item (B) is possible (and you can do it through usecode for extra flexibility and power), and is how a intro-like cutscene is planned for TFL; (A) isn't possible.
