 Music Won't Play
Author: Joe Ust (---.vc.shawcable.net)

Hi there.

Everything appears to work for me. I can hear all the sound effects with out any problems but the music won't play. I've tried setting my cfg file with both sound packs (the one for Soundblaster and the Roland one). With both, I get effects but no music.

Can someone give me a hand with this? It's frustrating me ... I just wish everything could be dos again. Life was so much easier.

DOS Easy ? Yes, like creating boot disks with enough free lower mem to run Ultima VII. That was easy.

Also, the music packs work only with Exult 1.1.x, because that is the version with the OGG support. With Exult 1.0 your only option is to use your platform's MIDI support. Make sure you can play MIDI correctly first.

We also need your exult.cfg file, OS details and paths

DOS was easy at the time when it was the OS of choice. But it's been 6 years since I've been into DOS so I have forgotten everything. Windows makes you forget how to manually set soundblaster settings.

I have Exult 1.0 right now. It said 1.1.x was unstable so I figured I'd go with the one that works. I guess I will just have to update my cfg file. I will post it here again if I run into trouble. Thanks.

Okay, that didn't take long.

I took out those sound packs from my cfg file and now I get no sound. I'm not sure what I've got wrong. How much of the cfg file do you want me to post?

Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

ok, so we now know that you are using windows and exult 1.0.
Go into your windows sound mixer and make sure that you have midi music turned on and on an audible level.
Now read
http://exult.sourceforge.net/docs.php#Audio (ignore digital music and fmsynth as it is only availlable on 1.1.x)
then read
http://exult.sourceforge.net/docs.php#Game Menu
and
http://exult.sourceforge.net/docs.php#audio_gump

Btw, you didn't have to take out the sfx in the cfg.
If it still does not work and you have followed the windows sound mixer advice above, please post your whole exult.cfg

Still won't play. It's probably something simple... all I get is the sound effects but no music. I'm using Windows XP. My paths are

c:\uc\u7\blackgate <-- blackgate
c:\uc\u7\serpent <-- serpent isle
c:\uc\u7 <-- exult

Here's my cfg file. Thanks so much again!

Can you play a MIDI file by double clicking it in Windows Explorer ?
Is the MIDI mixer level turned up ?

The cfg looks fine to me.

Okay, this is pretty embarrassing. The midi device was configured incorrectly by default. It had been playing midi previously before I tried installing some software that loaded some old drivers. It must've messed with my sound. It is now working correctly. Sorry to have bothered you all!
